Keith Foster – Course Designer
Designed by the renowned golf course architect, Keith Foster, Gateway National remains the only true links-style course in the St. Louis metropolitan area, and it is the only public-access course in the region to feature bentgrass fairways.
Foster’s Gateway masterpiece adds to a long, impressive list of award-winning designs, including The Quarry, a spectacular, nationally recognized course in San Antonio. Built on lands once owned by the National Stockyards and nestled in the historic Mississippi River basin, Gateway National is the transformation of mere pastureland into a breathtaking work of topographic art.
Foster grew up in Florida where he played competitive golf, and while attending college, Keith was a maintenance superintendent for four years. In ’81 he joined Wadsworth Golf Construction as a construction project manager. During his five years with Wadsworth, he was involved in eight golf course projects throughout the southeast, among them the green renovation work at Augusta National Golf Club.
In ’86, Keith became part of the national design firm of Arthur Hills & Associates. During his five years with the design firm, he contributed and was involved in 15 golf courses including Bighorn (it hosted The Skins Game from ’92 – ’95), Harbour Pointe (Golf Digest’s ’91 top public course in the country) and Walking Stick (ranked among the top-10 municipal courses in the country).
Keith established his own design firm in ’91 and has since opened 10 exceptional courses including such nationally acclaimed courses as The Quarry (number 28 in Golf Digest’s Top 75 upscale courses in country and ranked in 1996 and 1997 as the top public course in Texas) and Sun Ridge Canyon (number 42 in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 public courses and ranked as the top public course in Arizona). In 1999, Gateway National in metropolitan St. Louis, and The Tradition Course in Houston were rated the top public courses in their regions.
